Matinée Café Livestream: Jessica Pearson and the East Wind

Wednesday, August 16th from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm


Presented by the Shenkman Arts Centre, enjoy a livestream via Zoom of the latest concert in the Matinée Café series: Jessica Pearson and the East Wind. Jessica’s songwriting demonstrates her love her storytelling, which is inspired by folk, outlaw country, and Celtic traditions. Her musical stories are like patchwork quilts sewn with soul-stirring melodies and gorgeous modern folk-country arrangements.

Tai Chi for Health

Tai Chi QiGong is a mind-body Chinese practice that involves a combination of slow-motion exercises and deep breathing and meditation. By regularly practicing Tai Chi, participants will improve their physical fitness – balance, agility and flexibility, and increase strength in joints and muscles. Tai Chi can also improve one’s mental health by reducing stress levels and rejuvenating the mind and spirit. The class is open to anyone from all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels.

Classes on Mondays will specifically be Wu Qin Xi QiGong (Five Animals QiGong). Practice of the Five Animals QiGong exercise can ease the joints, strengthen the waist, and nourish the organs. This practice also lowers stress and anxiety, increases focus, and improves balance and flexibility. Five Animals QiGong is an ancient Wudang Taoist exercise. The movements of this Five Animals QiGong exercise are based on the movements of the tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and crane.

Caribbean Fit Fete

Every Wednesday from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

CARIBBEAN FIT FETE is a ‘Get Fit, Island Style” cardio workout. This experience emulates the spirit of the Caribbean; a celebration of movement, music and life. This workout makes for a perfect active escape from your hectic day, and stressful mind. During this pandemic, it’s become almost mandatory to seek such spaces as Caribbean Fit Fete to get you moving, engage in smiles and to lift your spirit.

Sharing the Songs You Love

Every Thursday from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

In a small group, participants are given an opportunity to share the music and songs that they love to others. Participants are encouraged to create a discussion by explaining the context and background of the song or music that they picked for the group. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the positive impact of music and the different musical genres and artists.

Chair Yoga

Every Tuesday from 10:00 am – 11:00 am and every Thursday from 9:30 am – 10:30 am

Chair yoga is an adaptation from modern yoga through the use of sitting on a chair or standing and using a chair for support. Participants in the class will learn various yoga poses that will help stretch and strengthen muscles, flexibility, and balance. The sessions will also include breathing and relaxation techniques. Chair yoga is open for those who are new to yoga and for those who are unable to participate in traditional yoga classes due to aging, injury or disability.

Dancing with Nubia

Every Saturday from 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Dancing with Nubia is a fun opportunity for participants to learn how to keep physically fit through dancing. Participants of the program will also learn about a well-balanced lifestyle that includes healthy eating, well-being, and exercise. At the end of each session, participants are encouraged to practice what they have learned by moving and dancing at home. The class is open for anyone from all ages, genders, backgrounds, and fitness levels.
